What to expect from a Biochemstry graduate job?

Many graduate biochemistry jobs are lab-based jobs. As Biochemistry graduate jobs involve exploring the chemical processes that can be related to living organisms, it encapsulates both biology and chemistry.  A competitive field, many biochemistry jobs require at least a Masters degree or a PhD in a relevant field. Though there are jobs for those with biochemistry Bachelor’s degrees.

Many large companies and government departments will run annual biochemistry graduate schemes. Some of the biggest schemes include those run by large pharmaceutical companies, the military, the NHS and biotech companies.

What can a biochemistry graduate do to have an edge in the job market?

A biochemistry degree should have helped you developed specific skills, such as laboratory skills, molecular biology techniques and research and data analysis. Many of the skills you’ve learned will be transferable and desirable in a number of roles. However, biochemistry is a competitive field and one of the best ways to have an edge is to already have gained some work experience in your field. Many science degrees now offer an option of a year in placement or you may be able to arrange for work experience yourself during breaks from study, or after you have graduated.
